Special Counsel for International Affairs

VITORIA, SPAIN

Advised Spanish company working to establish an innovative experiential educational platform in Vitoria, Spain.  Worked with the founders and local Spanish counsel to negotiate key educational partnerships with leading US and European universities, develop comprehensive US compliant academic and non-academic policies and procedures,  research and frame an application for accreditation to local Spanish educational authorities, and prepare the company for a first round venture capital investment.

Campus Internationalization

MIAMI, USA

Served as strategic adviser to one of the United States' largest urban public research universities. Advised on the negotiation of an academic partnership with a group of Middle Eastern private investors seeking to establish a new private university in the Gulf and conducted a comprehensive Campus Internationalization Review for the university's senior administration.

 

Special Counsel for International Affairs

DUBLIN, IRELAND

Served as Special Counsel to a large Florida private university for the negotiation and start-up of a new Study Abroad partnership with an accredited Irish academic institution, including preparation of the master operating agreement and execution of an employment strategy for key expatriate academic personnel.

 

Local Counsel Assessment and Strategic Adviser

TORONTO, CANADA

Assisted a global wellness education non-profit in considering whether to establish a Canadian affiliate, including initial assessment and coordination of local Canadian counsel, local business and governance structure, and IRS Form 990 tax reporting on international activities.

 

International Partner Due Diligence

KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT

Assisted a private foundation CEO with sourcing and evaluating contacts and business intelligence on NGO, private and governmental actors supporting anti-human trafficking efforts in Kuwait and other countries in the MENA region.

Policy Development and Crisis Management

BEIRUT, LEBANON

Framed, drafted and implemented critical policies, including those relating to discrimination and harassment, fraud, safe reporting (whistle blower), and grievances, for one of the oldest and largest US universities operating in the Middle East.  Led the successful Board and executive management response to a series of highly publicized  improper practices allegations, including coordination of outside counsel, independent counsel to a Board investigating committee, corporate public relations, and external auditors.

 

Global Project Management

BRATTLEBORO, USA

Co-chaired a Board initiated task force, advised by McKinsey & Co., charged with making recommendations for a global education and development assistance NGO's significant corporate restructuring.  Co-led the execution of the restructuring plan, including the sale of a major program division, and was awarded a Presidential Medal for dedication and leadership. 

 

Coaching for International Program Improvement

WASHINGTON, DC, USA

As a Board and Committee member, served as an early architect and advocate for the expansion of membership programming on global legal, tax, and operational issues for the US's largest professional association for college and university legal counsel.  This work helped to establish a full international track at the association's annual conference (1200 attendees).

BRATTLEBORO, USA

Managed the research, planning and implementation of the registration and start-up of compliant business activities in more than 50 countries for an accredited global education and development assistance NGO, including choice of entity, tax, employment, immigration, banking, and real estate matters.
